SS Braided Screen

Yeah. One of these days I’m gonna buoy a few braids and try them all in my mash tun so I can hopefully come up with brand/model recommendations.

After 4 years and many dozens of batches I changed my trashed braid. I had a couple feet of scrap romax lying around and a piece of leftover 1/2" dowel. I stripped and removed the ground wire, wrapped it around the dowel and then inserted the wire into the braid. Took about 10 minutes. After a few batches the braid still looks perfect.

My braid design looks just like your link. I did at one time try two mesh densities:

I ended up using the finer mesh braid.

I bought mine from Lowes near the hot water accessories, used a saw (after taping ends) to remove the fittings, and carefully removed the SS braid from the rubber hose; took about 20 minutes. To add, I brewed a 15 gallon batch today of hefeweizen (50 % wheat/ 50 % Pils) and didn’t have any issues with a stuck sparge or hose compression. I did use a lb of rice hulls though.

I made use the SS braid I used the design from Denny’s web site. I also watched a crap load of youtube videos and when I saw someone wrap the SS wire inside I thought that was a good idea, scince I have some I used it took another 35 seconds. Never had a stuck sparge I did ripp the brid off whie stirrrin ounce, it was a pain But I am just a bit more carefull now.

I have the looser mesh and I get stuck if I run off at full blast.

so at what rate of flow do you typically run-off/vorlauf then?

I’ll crack the valve for vorlauf and run half open to get my runnings.
