Mashing Oats

Can someone please educate me on adding oats to the mash? Brewing 5gal batch of Porter this weekend and looking to add a bit to the exisintg recipe. I have heard several ways of doing this; just wondering if there is a concensus on a more correct way. Thanks.

Depends on the type of oats. Rolled and flaked oats have had their starches gelatinized so they can just be tossed into the mash. Whole oaks need to be cooked or cereal mashed (google it) before mashing.

I use flaked oats and just toss them in with everything else.
