Gsrden hose question

I love my new 10 gallon pot that I was using on my stove. Unfortunately, the size of the pot and the full on burner ended up cracking the corian countertop. So I am now stuck in the garage. Do people use their garden hose to bring water to the garage or am I going to get off flavored from the hose?

I use an RV drinking water hose. The difference being it has NSF/FDA approved materials for drinking…

This. If you’ve ever drunk water from a garden hose, you will know why.

+1 on the RV hose. I also use an RV water filter cylinder.

Thanks. I used to build boats in my garage before I started brewing. I swear I bought less stuff for that than I am for brewing.

I am not sure what the RV hose is but what I did was get a large diameter clear plastic line at Lowes. It is right next to the ice maker line. I picked up a femal hose repair end, matched that to the right diameter clear water line and made a “hose” with those two pieces. That is my kettle filling hose for only a couple of dollars.

I did the same thing NanoBrew has done. I bought a carbon water filter and 15 feet of vinyl tubing and garden hose fittings.

I tapped into a cold supply line and installed an ice maker filter in the basement adjacent to the garage and ran the copper pipe through the sill plate into the garage, where it can be used to fill a bucket or pipe right to the kettle.

Have to admit I’ve been using the garden hose on all my 5 batches so far. I figured boiling would take out any odd flavors but honestly I’ve been a garden hose drinker since I was a little kid and have drunk water from much worse places. Maybe that as much as the hardness of my water accounts from an odd flavor here and there? Can’t say I’m convinced but I guess it’s worth considering.

You should be able to find a RV hose at any big box store.

ACE may not have them depending on the time of the year. But they should be able to get on for you.

Yes I drank from a standard hose 1000’s of times as a child. But using an RV hose to void off flavors is one easy thing to do IME.

They have them at Walmart. The inline filter as well. May pick one up tomorrow on the way to the LHBS.

I ran this to my garage

But I use bottled or store bought RO for beer making, because my home well water is super hard and alkaline.

My well water is very hard too. I can’t seem to find the results of the last testing and have yet to send anything off to Ward Labs so I’m thinking I’ll used distilled going forward. Did you get odd flavors or smells with your well water?

I would be a bit concerned about chemicals in the hose leaching into your water as you drink it (health concern). Keeping in mind the hose was probly made in China, using lead, arsenic, and etc.

I would find “food grade” hose (RV hose); or just do what I do: carry water from hydrant to pot by hand (in smaller pots) – gah! manual labor!

I’m gonna run the PEX from the basement with an inline filter & shutoff. If possible, i’d like to run the water to a utility sink & run a pvc drain back into basement(if i can get the right pitch). Right now doing the pack mule thing, carrying jugs (and everything else) out to garage.

I believe garden hose can have trace PCBs

I can only do dark beers with my water, so I buy RO and bottled spring water by delivery and add some CaCl to it - about 5 grams per 5 gallons of water. The flavors are otherwise fairly astringent due to the alkalinity.

Nice idea.
RV hose refers to a clean water supply hose for a recreational vehicle - usually white in color and made for clean drinking water. Looks like a white garden hose but doesn’t smell or flavor the water.

This thread definitely made me think about and discard the use of a standard garden hose for my brew water. You guys brought to light some issues I should have already thought of. I found a RV drinking water safe hose at Lowes. Walmart showed them in stock online but as usual my shopping experience at Wally World left something to be desired. Haha.

After talking to the owner of my lhbs I’m more confused on the subject of hard water. His words ‘some great beers are made with hard water.’ He didn’t recommend using distilled. Going to do more research on that subject. If anyone has input I’m open to it.
