Cooker

I’m looking into getting an outdoor cooker and have looked at all the cookers on NB and a few other sites and all the reviews. But with Thanksgiving coming up I’ve come across a lot of good deals on Turkey fryer set ups and was wondering if anyone had experiecne with turkey cookers?

They work great for 5 gallons batches. If you bump up to 10 gallon batches, you’re going to burn through a heck of a lot of propane unless you go with a floor burner like those sold a NB.

My .02.

Starting with 5 gallon but eventually plan to make the jump to larger so this answers my questions. I’ll skip on saving money now and just get a floor burner and save money over the long haul. Thanks!

I use this one: http://www.northernbrewer.com/shop/high … stand.html.

If you’re doing all grain make sure you stay next to it so you can turn the heat down
to avoid boil overs. I did to batches with mine and had the first one burp over the top
and the second one a bit more.

Happy brewing,
Big AL.

I use the hurricane burner, which I purchased originally from NB, but they stopped carrying it.

Its really nice, sips propane, and gets real hot. I would recommend it highly.

I, and many others, have to disagree with the statement that you have to use a “homebrew” burner.

I have a $30 turkey fryer. It’s rated for 110,000 BTU’s and does a fine job. IMO if you get one of the 200,000+ burners you are going to blow through propane faster then I will as you will crank it to the max thinking you will get to a boil faster. Reality is you are blowing your heat/flame past the kettle and wasting fuel.

The only thing you need to look for is to find a stand that is not built specifically for the pot included. In other words a flat top. Unless you have access to welding equipment and can modify the stand when you upgrade to a larger pot. Mine had a small ridge at the top that would only fit the pot size that came with it. Modifications were needed to use wider pots.

This burner from Sabco, the description talks about using with a keg, is only rated at 55,000 BTU’s.

I doubt they would sell a sub-par burner.

I had noticed this in the past that Sabco used this burner and always wondered why I would need the other burners that other tout. hmm…
