I took SWMBO out over the weekend to a place of her choice for dinner. As our waiter is getting our drink order, I ask him “You got any dark beers?” He says “yes, I think so” and doesn’t say another word to me. He brings the Mrs. her merlot, and brings me…Bud Black Crown. Yup, Bud.
I asked if he had any other dark beers, that’s our only one, it says it’s black. I just manned up (or down) and drank the awful beverage before me.
When asked if I wanted another “black” beer…“No, I’m good, I’ll have a water”
After a little more investigation, I found out that is actually the darkest beer they had. I gave a quick crash course on stouts and porters… which fell on deaf ears.
Anybody else have this happen. In my area beer comes in a blue can and says lite on the side, but dark is dark wherever you may be.
The pizza there is bad enough.
I learned that fast when I was in college in Storm Lake, Iowa in the early 70s. The pizza at Pizza Hut was, of course, awful (as it still is)…but they made decent sandwiches (at least they did back then).
The saving grace was that they always had Miller Dark on draft there back then, and it actually hit the spot!
What’s with slinging the hate on Pizza Hut? There’s none in workable distance to my home/work, so I haven’t hit the hut in 15+ years, but I used to love them. (Real Pizza Hut, not that Pizza Hut Express heat lamp cr*p) OK, maybe my taste buds have refined since I quit smoking, but a Pizza Hut Meat Lover’s could annihilate the munchies back when I was in college.
You just gotta realize that comparing Pizza Hut to a proper pizza joint, is like comparing Taco Bell to Mexican food. On the surface it may appear similar, but they’re completely unauthentic, and yet quite delicious in their own way.
Can definitely relate there…
A friend of mine would PREFER a coors lite any day of the week. As for the dark beer, it’s really a shame, it seems as though most places (i.e. not quality bars/restaurants) treat dark beers as a monolith of sorts. They think putting one dark beer on the list will satisfy that “niche”.
Same thing happens when I visit family in Augusta GA. As for something Dark and nothing. As for a Red or a Brown and nothing. Darkest thing I was able to get last visit was a Yuengling Lager. Although if I look hard enough in some of the little bars/restaurants I can find a New Castle or a Killians. They are staring to get a few places that actually have craft on tap, but slow is the pace when it comes to the laid back south who is bottle fed on bud lite.
