Unusual lambic taste

So my buddy and I brewed the base recipe for Dawson’s Kriek (no cherries yet) and when I tasted it at the 6 month mark, Lo and behold it tastes like a normal saison. What’s up here? Why no funk? I am fairly experienced but have not done many Belgians… Any likely culprits? Should I just pitch another lambic blend and hope for the best?
