Stir Plates?

I make yeast starters when I use liquid yeasts. Are stir plates useful? Do they increase the yeast cell count? Are they worth buying?

Thanks!!

Yes they increase cell counts and mainly speed up the process and can make it an easy overnight step up in yeast numbers. Certainly numbers projected are backed up by yeast calculators. It is another gadget for brewing and not inexpensive. I ordered mine on a sale and that took some of the sting out of it.

You can make a DIY stir plate with some old computer parts if you want. You can search for it on Google.

If not, there’s a cheap one online that is sufficient. Google the StirStarter. I got mine at Bell’s General Store online. It is listed for $44. I honestly wouldn’t spend $100+ for a stir plate, the cheap one I have works just fine.

+1 on stirstarter…works great.

Definitely a great addition to the home brewery. Built mine for around $25. Good write up on the AHA website on building one.

Yes and yes! I have two. A $40 and $100 one. They both work about the same but the cheap one is loud and more expensive one is really quiet.

Great stir plat. Has a great warranty. Mine has been fixed twice because of it getting wet (my own fault). http://www.homebrewing.org/The-Stirstar … _1306.html

Definitely worth it. I made mine years ago and still going strong. Fan and magnets from an old computer, project box and switch from Radio Shack, and plug from an old phone charger. I probably have less than $20 in it total. I really have no skills at making this sort of thing and found it fairly easy from instructions found on the inter webs.

Here are some decent links with info:

I went ahead and bought the one from NB. I think it will be worth the 100 dollhairs…if it last that is.

Can’t wait to put to use on Friday!

You talking about the maelstrom? If so I have one and it moves major wort.

3 schools of thought on this:
1: Buy one pack of yeast and build it up and best way is with a plate.
2. Make a batch of less ABV and pitch new beer onto yeast cake (old school)
3. The other is use more yeast (buy another pack).

My brew schedule is erratic and I no longer have the time for building starters. With more competition in the yeast game and the success of dry yeast I just buy more yeast. While I am at it, I think most of the effects of yeast starters are overstated. That said, a plate is a proven method to really improve cell counts if you want to build em.
