Same East, two different colors

I’m making two yeast starters. Both are the same yeast, white labs wlp001. After shaking up the packages for a couple of minutes, I noticed that they are 2 different colors. Both packages of yeast were manufactured three days apart in October of 2017. I am attaching a picture of the two packages of yeast. Has anybody ever seen this before?

Have not seen that before. I wonder if the darker yeast could have had a hot day before you received it. Would the color warrant planning a larger starter for possible loss of viability compared to the other pack of yeast??

It’s normal. Different cultures are propagated on different media, and some of them are darker in appearance. Nothing to worry about.

They are both pitched and will be ready in a couple of days. I did label them just in case. Thanks for setting my mind at ease. I’m surprised I haven’t seen this before as 001 is my go to Ale yeast. Thanks!
