I would like to try adding a bit of treacle should i add it at the beginning of the boil or nearer to the end
It depends on whether you want it to raise your ABV or want the flavor. If you want the ABV then the beginning, if you want the taste, then the very end, like at 0. Otherwise the boil will change the sugar to something else entirely.
