I have plenty of plastic pails with lids to contain any “problem”. 
I have 1/2 filled 22oz bottles several times with no problem, but I normally drink that one first.
Air is infinitely compressible (if the container can handle the pressure.) Liquid does not compress like air can, so the more head space available…the more pressure builds up in the bottle and more surface area for the gas to press against giving you more chance of explosion.
This I learned from my old hydraulic days.
