Mulch for hops

Would spent grains left over after the mash be a good mulch?
Would you just spread them out evenly?

I did the same thing this past fall. I’m sure it provides some nutrients back to the soil but how much is unknown. I don’t think it makes much of a difference as long as the spent grains don’t prevent the shoots from sprouting in the spring.

You could compost the grain and then spread it around.

I compost my spent grains. However, I also compost just about every bit of organic matter that my house and yard produce.

Same here. I built a compost bin, and everything from the house, the garden, and the yard go into it…including a decent amount of leaves every fall. It’s been piling for 2 years now, and I have yet to take anything out of it.

Bin is framed about 2 feet by 2 feet, roughly 5 feet high. I have had it piled overflowing more than 2 dozen times, and as of this morning, it stands maybe 2/3rds full.

Just piling spent grains around them will get quite aromatic in a few days if it’s warm (ask me how I know). It would be best to compost them first.
