Info on brew kettle

ok iam new to this and iam going to make a kettle from a keg i have read that you do not need a lid i was wanting to know do you need one for the cool down iam going to make a wort chiller so do i need a lid to cover it or no

I realize I may come off as an a…, do you have a “shift” key and some punctuations keys? They are helpful to make posts that one can easily comprehend.

You don’t need a lid, some people like to have one. You can make a lid out of the piece that you cut out by welding some washers on to it that hang over the edge.

You dont need a lid. Although, having one will come in handy, especially in cold climates.

A lid can be easily made with the piece you cut off the top of the keg.

I am sure you could make one easily and I am sure you won’t regret it.

i prolly could but dont know how my cut will end up if it is round or not but main was just wanting to know if i needed one for cool down or not or if i could something else

It shouldn’t make a difference if the cut is round or not.

+1! The texting generation is reaching brewing age.

OTOH, maybe he only has one hand.

Do you have a kettle already? When I had my keggle, I just used the lid off my old 5 gallon pot. Easy as that!

no i plan on making one tomorrow i just want to know is it nessacery to have one rite away or can i make one later on if i fill i need one

Not necessary - but recommended.

ok thanks that is what i was wanting to know

While you are chilling, you might want to put something over the top to prevent anything from falling/flying in - maybe some tinfoil. (If you’re brewing outside)

that is what i was thinking aND thanks agen

what would be a good thing to stir with

A long handled spoon? A mash paddle? A canoe paddle? I have a buddy who says he uses a hockey stick…

Scroll down in this post, and you’ll see what I made to do a circular cut…Don’t know what kind of equipment you have, but the same principle could be applied to an electric grinder as well, ( 4 1/2 or 5 inch).
A 2 inch wooden dowel could be used for your centering fixture.

I hope you are handier with power tools than you are with punctuation…( That’s a joke, Son, that’s a joke!)

Good luck!

And don’t use wood on the cold side of the boil - sanitation is very difficult with wood. On the pre-boil and during the boil, you have no problem using wood to stir. Get a big stainless spoon, if you can swing it.

I have a copper rod that I marked with volume measurements based on the end of the rod being at the bottom and center of the keg. That way I know I am hitting 5, 6, 10 gallons, or whatever size I am doing that day. It works okay to stir in liquid extract.

I use the lid from the pot I used to use for brewing. The lid won’t fit when the chiller is in the keggle but I have never really worried about it much.

A piece of screen will also keep bugs out, but let the wort cool quickly (a lid tends to slow the cooling process a little).

Just a thought.

So true! I get texts that I don’t even understand… prolly IYKWIM.
