Hops extract

first time using hops extract. After chilling notice some reddish pepper sze dots in the wort. Can this be extract residue of some sort ? never seen this before

Perhaps…. Bugs? Hops are green, I can’t think of anything else…

I’m sorry I meant Hops Extract not malt extract.
I fixed my post

This is weird. I admit I don’t have any experience with hop extracts but I’ve never heard of this.

The last time I used hop extract, there were a lot of small black dots stuck to my copper immersion chiller, that I noticed after the brew was complete. It was just a small bittering charge for a German Hefeweisse. The beer came out great. It seemed like a weird phenomenon and I haven’t used any hop extracts since.

I"ve not used the hops extract before and may not again depending. I think the dots were just impurities. The recipe calls for it so I tried it. Touched a bit to my tongue. Don’t do that. this recipe has a ton of hops and supposedly it cuts down on material but really only about an oz of bittering hops wo.uld’nt make a difference. I’ve read about a “smoother” bitterness what ever that means.

I didn’t see anything on my IC only floaters

Try crush one to see what in the world it is?

Maybe pieces of a farmall tractor? (:

When I have used hop extract in the past, it typically takes a lot of stirring and time for it to integrate. I don’t remember ever having any red dots but there were always dots floating around that I would say looked like pine sap. It also leaves a residue as it boils down on the side of the kettle which takes some extra scrubbing to remove. I have been very happy with the results whenever I’ve used it.

:beers:

yeah I didn’t have any residue and didn’t stir it anymore than the torbino sugar. I strained out the hops when transferring and didn’t notice anything the fermentor

Can confirm. A long time ago I bought some hop extract and made hop shots with it. Never got around to using it so I tossed it. While filling the syringes I tasted some. Worst hop burn you’ll ever get. Nothing pleasant about it.

well Im happy how the extract bittered the Julius. It has a nice smooth bitterness, not harsh at all for 90 IBU. I used what I had left in another IPA with some pellets. We will see how that compares

Kind of related story.
A long time ago, early in my brewing, I knew a guy that worked at a huge AB brewery nearby. One day he gave me a gallon jug of some kind if hop extract they used. He was some kind of mechanical maintenance guy and not really involved in the brewing process there so he was unfamiliar with the stuff.

I kept the jug for years afraid to try any since I had no idea how much to use since they brewed 5,000 gallons compared to my 5.I also didn’t want my beer to taste like Bud  Eventually I just threw it out.

why didn’t you experiment

Probably should have but that was when I was first getting started and sticking to the recipe or kit instructions. Didn’t know if I should use and eye dropper or measuring cup of the stuff.
