Hop Help

Making an IPA tomorrow and need some help figuring out hopping schedule.

I have 2oz Northern Brewer and 1oz each Centennial, Amarillo and Cascade.

Any suggestions?

I think you need more hops.

Whats your OG? Not knowing that, I would do:

1oz NB (60)
Split the rest into 0.25oz additions and combine them into a blend
1 addition at 20 min, 10, 5, flameout

buy some more of the Amarillo, Cascade, Cent to dry hop.

I would shoot for a total IBU that gives you an IBU/O.G. ratio of approx 1.0-1.1. So for example if your O.G. is 1.060, then a total IBU of 60-66 would be a reasonable target.

I would use the Cent, Cascade and Amarillo in the flavoring/aroma stages with additions at 15-20min; 5-10 min; and zero min boil-time remaining.

You could just mix them all up and add 1/3 oz of each at three additions or you could add them as 3 seperate 1 oz additons.

After you figure out how many IBU you are getting from these three hops then you can figure out how much of the NB hops to add at the beginning (60 min) of your boil in order to reach the desired total IBU level.

And then you could consider obtaining some additional hops for dry hopping later on.

Muddy. Thats exactly what I was looking for.
The recipe is actually from the book Brewing Classic styles. All grain.

This is my first all-grain batch and I bought what I thought would be good IPA hops.

OG 1.077
I figured to use only 1oz of the NB hops for bittering but you say use both.
Maybe I can FW 1oz…

FWH doesn’t have the same hop utlization as a 60 minute boil. Depending on who you ask, FWH is calculated between a 15-20min addition for IBUs.

To get the full IBUs out of the NB hops, put them all in at 60.

EDIT:
Using Brewer’s Friend IBU calculator, breaking up the NB hops gives you IBU’s of 60 whereas putting them all in at 60min gives you IBU’s of 75.

Based on the ratio recommended above, you’d be better off putting them all in at 60.

With actually knowing your OG I will rework the additions.

Are you sure it wasn’t 1.067? 1.077 falls in the double IPA range.

Here is something with 1.077 OG. moved the 15 minutes NB addition in with the 60 to get you more IBU’s.

.25 crystal 40

Looks like you will have a pretty good beer on your hands.

I have gradually gone to less and less crystal with IPAs. For my personal taste, teh specialty grains I have settled on (for now) are:
1.5 vienna
1.0 munich
0.25 crystal 80

OG 1.069[/quote]I also think you’re using too much crystal and it’ll end up tasting sweeter since you don’t have enough IBUs to balance. I would cut the 15L in half or buy another oz or two of hops for the boil (and 2-3 more for the dryhop either way).

I agree. Almost 12% crystal is more than I like in an IPA. I really like being in the 5%-7.5% range.

OK. I will stop and get some more hops. Grains are crushed and in a bucket ready to go already.

Thanks.
