Hofbräuhaus München Helles

Had a Hofbräuhaus München Helles on tap this weekend. Really good. It was fairly carbonated and actually tasted like a light bohemian lager. Great pool, bbq party beer! Just enough spicy hops to keep it interesting. Made me think about what I need to get that sharp dry quality to my Czech Pils recipe…

LOVE Hofbrauhaus…they have an awesome beer hall across the river from my old stomping grounds in Cincinnati and had the Munchen Helles on draft as a standard. (How did you get the umlaut?)

Copied and pasted! haha

Hands down my favorite German light lager. Only good on tap though since they are in the dreaded green bottles.

I have to agree hands down favorite german light lager hofbrauhaus makes great beers. I have been working for few years on a recipe close to theirs. Most helles are brewed with just pilsner malt. Never could match the taste they get using just it. I do have a recipe that won gold twice in light lager and best of show Munich helles. At local brew contest.

Feel free to share that recipe damian. My next batch will be a second attempt at a czech pils but I’d like to brew a batch of light lager for the summer too.

Maybe they decoct? Maybe it’s the grain?

I’m almost sure they decoct just for traditional brewing and I’m sure the grain is half of it too. But still hard to match that taste they get. I tried ever pilsner grain I could get castle wayman you name it even mixed them. Any way I will post my recipe so you will have it on recipe page Danny. It’s posted now !!!

I see others want a real hefeweizen recipe as i do, I see no one has used barley malt and wondered why. HB munchen website list the ingredentes of water, wheat malt, barley malt, hops, yeast so coould the barley be the reason you cant match the true taste of HB hefeweizen ?.

I’m from Bayern and finicky when it comes to hefeweizen bier as for the umlaut, I installed windows and clicked German keyboard.

Thanks for the information on setting up for the umlaut. For Vondetour, there seems to be a bit of a disconnect on the types of beers being mentioned. The Helles is a lager and I believe you are talking about a hefeweizen?

Ken Lenard has a recipe for a Hofbrau Helles. I have no idea how close it comes to the original, but Ken has a habit of designing great lagers. Go to: http://www.freewebs.com/kenlenard/recipes.htm

You’ll have to scroll about 40% of the way down the page to find the Helles recipe. The biggest problem I’ve had brewing Ken’s recipes is deciding which one to brew next. His Helles is definitely going to be my next beer … unless I decide to do Memory Lapse Pale Ale again. Or, maybe I’ll brew Ansbach Bavarian Lager.

I am new to brewing but I have read about top fermented beer “ale” and bottom fermented beer “lager” http://www.cameronsbrewing.com/our-brew … the-story/ but like I said I’m new to brewing.

Its all good. This forum is a great learning tool with some amazing brewers who are patient and willing to share their experience. Stick with it.

Where do you see that?

Disregard. I just saw your post about pilsner malt.
