Help...need more color for porter mid mash

Hi All,
I am making an all grain version kind of like the Midnight Wheaten porter.

6# 2-row
6# wheat
1# flaked wheat
1# chocolate wheat
.5# caramel wheat
.5# rice hulls
OG 1.062

I just mashed in, and it looks kinda light brown, and my recipe says SRM 24. (yes, I should have noticed that).

now I’m off to work, leaving the mash for about 5 hours. (have been doing this for last few batches with great results).

Question is…
if color still seems NOT BLACK ENOUGH, how do I add color mid mash?

I could run to NB and get some black patent? about .5#?
add to mash before drain first runnings? how long?

it’s at about 155* now, I usually only lose 5* in 5 hours.

thoughts anyone?

thanks!

4oz of carafe should do the trick. Just add to mash right before you sparge.

I think Dan nailed. Run your SRM numbers if want, but that’s exactly what I would do (and it has absolutely nothing to do with my affinity of Die deutsche Fußballnationalmannschaft).

Less chance for astringency with this approve as well. Works really will for CDA’s.
