Finished my Keezer, but Can't Use It!

In terms of assembly, I was very happy with how everything came together given my carpentry skills. I finished assembly last Sunday, but I still can’t keep the lid closed because of the overwhelming chemical smell from the silicone or the rubber spray I used on one of the components (or both). Very annoyed.

It’s not terribly creative, but here are some pics of the finished product (click the thumbs for a larger image):

Edit: fixed broken pics

Give it some time, that new car smell will wear off soon enough.

Great looking set-up…well done! I wish I had a stout faucet on mine.

Put a fan on it. Give it a few days. It’s pretty good looking don’t sell yourself short

Looks good. What is the smell stopping you?

As mentioned, put a muffin fan or something inside, with a big bag of activated charcoal, to help soak up the smells.

I’m guessing that you already have it loaded and running?

If not, just open the top and point a big box fan at it overnight.

Thanks guys. It was a fun project. I learned a few things along the way.

I’ve had a fan on it the last couple days. I think last night made the biggest difference, since I turned a box fan to blow vertically down directly into the unit, instead of trying to blow out from one side to the other. One more day might make a difference, but I hate the idea of going into Friday night with room temp kegs!

I required a fully stainless stout faucet to go with my five SS Perlicks. There aren’t a lot of them out there. I ended up getting this one for what I think is a pretty reasonable price:

I had not even considered activated charcoal. Does it work more effectively than baking soda (which I tried and I don’t think it made a bit of difference)? If so, I might pick some up just to pick up any residuals.

Edit: where do you buy activated charcoal that isn’t in a capsule form?

Thanks. I should have specified that I meant a brick and mortar store, so I could pick some up tomorrow. Looks like a pet store could work.

True…I didn’t think about that!

PDC bro - pretty damned cool. The stink will fade. Nice job!

Damn! After a night with the lid closed, the odor built back up. Oh well, I’ve got cold beer and am pouring tonight. I guess, worst case the liquid tubing picks up some order and I have to replace it. At least I’ve got 68 ft. more on hand.

I found some activated charcoal at Petsmart in the aquarium section.

I thought I would post an update, because I know you all are losing sleep over this

I dumped the whole container of activated carbon (~450 grams I think) into a 1 gallon paint strainer bag and suspended it from my one unused shank. It has definitely made a difference (thanks for the idea Stealth), but the odor is still there. I have not had any pours since Sunday, but after three days I had not detected any off-flavor from the odor penetrating my liquid lines. Will see in a couple days if that’s still the case.

The images links are showing up broken for me?

Any chance for a repost? Thinking about working towards a keezer by the birthday.

Fixed. Thanks. If you click the pics, you can see a slideshow of the construction (where I remembered to take photos)

What size chest freezer?

14.8 cu. ft. It will fit 8 ball lock kegs.

I’ve just added a 3 way manifold, so I can serve at two different pressures using two my gauge regulator, or so I can run one CO2 and one beer gas after I get nitro equipment.

How ‘bout now?..How’s that smell treatin’ ya’?
