Dry Hopping an English pale ale

I’m going to brew 10 gallons of The Innkeeper this weekend. I’ve made it several times and it’s a favorite. I was thinking about dry hopping one of the carboys- I’ve got some Kent Goldings laying around. Any thoughts on whether or not it’s a good idea?

You’re going to get a different beer with the DH. Since you are using such a mild hop as EKG the effects will be minimal. I say go for it.

If you’re going for a traditional English bitter, dry hops can be appropriate, but in smaller quantities than in an APA. I wouldn’t do more than one ounce of EKG in a 5 gal. batch.

I’ve had Timothy Taylor’s Landlord (the beer that inspired Innkeeper) in the UK a few times. It has very little hop aroma.

If you don’t care for authenticity, do what you want.

Kent Goldings are excellent for dry hopping, but it will give you less of a citrus character than Styrian Goldings that probably come with that kit. The recipe is based on Timothy Taylor’s Landlord Bitter and it finishes with Styrian Goldings. I have dry hopped my own Landlord clone with Styrian Goldings, and it came out very citrusy, but still had some English character. It does not come out citrusy like American C hops.
