DME instead of priming sugar to bottle?

Can I use DME instead of priming sugar to carbonate my bottles? I would rather keep my batches to the four pure ingredients. I read about gyle however I already have a batch in a carboy ready to bottle. Is I can use DME how much? 1 cup to carbonate a five gallon batch? Thanks. Hopefully only a few more batches to bottle before buying a keg system this spring.

Look at the calculators below for amounts. You should measure the sugar/DME by weight and not volume.

I have only used DME for priming using http://www.northernbrewer.com/priming-sugar-calculator/ with great results. I used honey once to prime a cyser with good results too.

Does the Rheinhietsgewhatchamacallit allow for DME? Keep in mind, at one time it didn’t technically allow yeast. I know the Real Ale police are good with priming sugar.

First of all, the R’gebot was about taxes, not purity.

Yes, you can use DME to prime. It takes longer than sugar to carb and since you don’t know the fermentability of the DME you really don’t know what the carbonation level will be. I gave up on it as unreliable long ago after doing some testing.

I usually use table sugar, or corn sugar if I have some around.
