Color of harvested yeast

I brewed a black ale with white labs cry havok. Theres a small layer of white yeast but most is pretty brown. I did the same washing process i always do which usually yeilds big cakes of white yeast. Is the color of the yeast a sign of viability?

Not really. IME yeast harvested from black beers will look that way. If you rinse it enough it will eventually be white.
