Citra Hops

For some reason, I have a ton of 1 oz packages of Citra hops, but none of the recipes that I brew ever call for them. They are at least 18 months old and I cannot remember how or why I got them. BUT, I see this an an opportunity! Anybody got ideas for a brew that uses a lot of these? Citra IPA?

Citra is great for late additions in an IPA but I don’t like it for bittering, adds a sweaty gym sock taste/aroma that takes a while to age out if at all. Great dryhop - can transform a mediocre beer into a hop festival and I’ve found that up to 1.5 oz per keg in a simple IPA is good and with something with a little more malt or even some roast I’ll go heavier with excellent results. It also plays really well with Centennial, Amarillo, Simcoe, etc.

I love them for dry hopping. Unique aroma.

I made a Chinook IPL (lager) that is in secondary. I need to taste it because it has an ounce of Chinook in as a dry hop. Think Citra would play well with that to kick it up a notch?

Yes, but use maybe half the weight of the Chinook or you will lose it to the Citra.

This is becoming my house APA. The citrus/tropical blend of Citra is quite tasty.

OG 1055
95% pale malt
5% Crystal 40

.5 Citra FWh
.5 Magnum 60
1 oz Citra 15
1 oz Citra 5
1 oz Citra Dry Hop
Wyeast 1272

BeerSmith says the IBUs are 80, but I don’t perceive the bitterness to be that high. (That’s using 20 minutes for the FWH calcs). I could just be jaded, though

You say Citra and I think Sierra Nevada Torpedo. It’ll make a good IPA regardless of what you do with it!

I sort of like Torpedo. Is that all Citra?

Torpedo = Magnum, Crystal, Citra.

Look for a Zombie Dust clone… about 9 ounces of citra…

I brewed this last year around this time, and it was fabulous.

Were they stored in the freezer for 18 months?

Yes they have been in the freezer the whole time

I have yet to try this but I’m prepping for this to be my first batch that I go all out on my own.

Citra works very well with Chinook.

Search out “Surly Abrasive” in this forum. I think at least two recipes were posted in one thread. Double IPA, mostly citra, some warrior, golden naked oats. I just made my second batch last week.

It seems like people either love or hate Citra. I dislike Citra as a single or even as the prominent hop. But it mixes nicely as a background hop in that realm in between spicy/early and citrusy/floral. The problem is, it’s such a potent hop that it is hard to blend into a background role.

I do an American wheat IPA that uses the following hop schedule. I like this a lot, but it still has a little too much Citra. I’ll cut it down a little next time and add more Cascade.

1.00 oz Magnum [14.30 %] - Boil 80.0 min Hop 4 41.7 IBUs

1.00 oz Cascade [4.70 %] - Boil 10.0 min Hop 7 4.7 IBUs
0.75 oz Citra [14.88 %] - Boil 10.0 min Hop 8 11.2 IBUs
0.50 oz Willamette [4.70 %] - Boil 10.0 min Hop 9 2.4 IBUs

1.00 oz Cascade [4.70 %] - Boil 5.0 min Hop 10 2.6 IBUs
0.50 oz Citra [14.88 %] - Boil 5.0 min Hop 11 4.5 IBUs
0.50 oz Willamette [4.70 %] - Boil 5.0 min Hop 12 1.3 IBUs

0.75 oz Cascade [4.70 %] - Boil 0.0 min Hop 13 0.0 IBUs
0.75 oz Citra [14.88 %] - Boil 0.0 min Hop 14 0.0 IBUs
0.50 oz Willamette [4.70 %] - Boil 0.0 min Hop 15 0.0 IBUs

1.00 oz Cascade [8.90 %] - Dry Hop 7.0 Days Hop 17 0.0 IBUs
0.50 oz Citra [12.00 %] - Dry Hop 7.0 Days Hop 18 0.0 IBUs
0.50 oz Willamette [4.70 %] - Dry Hop 7.0 Days Hop 19 0.0 IBUs

I don’t know. A lot of people seem to like citra but man i just can’t enjoy it. Maybe it is because people say it is mangoish and I hate mango. Now Amarillo, man that is my hop of choice. I love it.
