Ceramic carboys?

i have a five Gal. ceramic carboy my great great grandmother passed down to me. I was wondering if i can use it to brew you can not see threw it so how would i know if its fermenting and how would i clean it. I am about to make my first batch of mead and if i can use this carboy that would save me some money in the future and give a use for this big thing in my barn. thank y’all for you help.

I’ve never heard of someone using one, but if you can get it clean and sanitized, and get an airlock in it, it should work. It doesn’t matter if you can’t see inside; you can’t see inside stainless steel fermenters either. My concerns would be as follows:
Is the material water or air permeable?
Is any coating that’s on it foodsafe?
Is any coating that’s on it going to hold up to the low pH of mead and beer?
