Carbonation in primary fermenter?

I decided to take a gravity reading on my IIPA after a week in primary. I hit my target almost dead on but as I was sampling it (tasted good but a little sweet) I noticed it tasted slightly carbonated. When I shook it a little in the cylinder, I noticed some bubbles rising to the top as if it were carbonated. Is this normal? There was never any obstruction and there was plenty of airlock activity so the C02 always had the ability to escape. Anyone ever experienced anything like this?

Yes it’s normal. Before taking a gravity reading, you need to de-gas the sample, splash between 2 glasses. Otherwise the CO2 will lift the hydrometer and give you a false reading.
