BRU 1 Hops

Anyone tried the BRU 1 experimental hops?

I got a pound a while back and never tried them. Thinking of combining them with Citra for an IPA tomorrow.

No but it looks good with Citra

Here’s what i ended up with:

15 lbs Pale Malt (2 Row) US (2.0 SRM) Grain 1 76.9 % 1.17 gal
2 lbs BEST Vienna (BESTMALZ) (4.6 SRM) Grain 2 10.3 % 0.16 gal
1 lbs 8.0 oz Wheat Malt (Avangard) (2.0 SRM) Grain 3 7.7 % 0.12 gal
8.0 oz BEST Acidulated (BESTMALZ) (3.0 SRM) Grain 4 2.6 % 0.04 gal
8.0 oz Caramel/Crystal Malt - 40L (40.0 SRM) Grain 5 2.6 % 0.04 gal
0.50 oz BRU 1 [16.00 %] - First Wort 60.0 min Hop 6 13.2 IBUs -
0.50 oz Citra [13.00 %] - First Wort 60.0 min Hop 7 10.7 IBUs -
1.20 oz BRU 1 [16.00 %] - Boil 60.0 min Hop 8 28.8 IBUs -
0.50 oz BRU 1 [16.00 %] - Boil 5.0 min Hop 9 2.4 IBUs -
0.50 oz Citra [13.00 %] - Boil 5.0 min Hop 10 1.9 IBUs -
2.00 oz BRU 1 [16.00 %] - Steep/Whirlpool 20.0 min, 17 Hop 11 5.1 IBUs -
2.00 oz Citra [13.00 %] - Steep/Whirlpool 20.0 min, 170 Hop 12 4.2 IBUs -
1.0 pkg American Ale (Wyeast Labs #1056) [124.21 ml] Yeast 13 - -
2.00 oz BRU 1 [16.00 %] - Dry Hop 5.0 Days Hop 14 0.0 IBUs -
2.00 oz Citra [13.00 %] - Dry Hop 5.0 Days Hop 15 0.0 IBUs -

Curious to hear how they play with Citra, I’d imagine that’s a tasty combo. I used them with el dorado and azacca for a huge pineapple forward NEIPA.

That sounds pretty sweet. Mind sharing the grain bill?

Sorry it took so long, I was doing some birthday drinking and grilling yesterday.

7# Marris Otter
3# 2row
3# flaked oats
1# White Wheat
8oz C40

Came in just under 8% abv that was well hidden with the hop combo

No worries. Looks interesting. At the risk of being high maintenance, do you mind sharing your hops schedule? I really haven’t brewed what I’d call a successful NEIPA. Mine always tend to be more bitter due to my heavy handed approach to FWH and 60 min.

1oz Warrior @FWH
2oz Amarillo, 2oz Azacca, 2oz El Dorado WP for 30 mins @170 degrees
2oz Amarillo, 2oz Azacca, 2oz El Dorado, 2oz BRU-1 2 dryhops (1st 48 hrs into ferm and 2nd @kegging)

I try not to bitter more than 30IBU’s for this style.

I brewed this for the Iron Hill comp and it placed 8th out of 53, can’t recall the exact score.

Interesting. I usually think of warrior as a bittering hop like cluster, smoother than something like magnum. Normally I wouldn’t think of using those type of hops as FWH since I’ve always associated FWH as more like a flavor charge than a bittering charge.

Was your intent to soften the bittering or gain flavor from the Warrior?

My thoughts are in line with yours so I’m not sure exactly why I did this but to lessen the bittering charge.

haha. Well it clearly worked out well.

I have some cluster and some amarillo but I’m thinking maybe a combo of amarillo, azacca, el dorado and Bru1 for FWH, maybe a 5 min addition, definitely lots a whirlpool and 2 DHs.

Thanks for your help @brewmanchu

The biggest hit on scores was oxidation. I brewed this on the old system and with 23oz of hops total i was kind of asking for that result. The FWH combo would be interesting to try out, I’m getting around 20 IBU’s if you used .25 oz of all 4.

No prob @dannyboy58

Beersmith says its a little over 35 IBU with FWH entered as 60 mins in the boil, 21.6 IBU if I enter the FWH as 20 minutes in the boil.

I’ve always entered it as 20 even though they’re obviously in there the whole time. I think @denny recommended that years ago when I first heard of FWH for his Waldo Lake Amber Ale. I believe the reasoning was you don’t get full bittering from FWH.

I enter them as 20 min additions per the @denny thread years ago. Either way you’re in good shape. I may revisit this brew in the very near future.

I just received my hops yesterday. Loaded up on Citra and got some more BRU-1 to try again. Did you brew with these yet @dannyboy58?

Why is it that FWH would have less IBUs than a 60min addition?

The calculated IBUs are actually greater. But the time of contact at a low temp allows the oils to become more easily soluble, presumably providing a more smooth bitterness.

Ok so we are talking about perceived bitterness of FWH being less but not actually less IBUs. If bitterness isn’t bitterness then perhaps we need to come up with a new system of measurement

Now this is something you can shed light with all your vast knowledge…
And you could call it the “Squeegee theory”… It does have an attention grabbing ring to it!! :mask:

I did and just had the first taste of the finished IPA. I kegged it two days ago with the second DH in the keg and have had it at 25psi. Just turned it down today to my normal serving pressure and got a taste. Less carbonated than I expected and there’s a lot hop matter in precipitation atm so judging it for taste wouldn’t be fair. It’s got huge tropical fruits aroma. So that part is a success.

My first impression is it’s not bitter enough for me but we’ll see. I wanted to try the bru1 as a bittering hop since it has such a high AA% but my first impression is it’s a bit “softer” bitterness, for lack of a better word, than what I like. The aroma on this beer is outrageous right now though. Very happy with that.
