Bottles

Can i put pry off caps on a twist off bottle?
Can i use Bud Lite Bottles for my Beer and put pry off caps on them?
Is there a difference between in thread in a twist off and a pry off?

Twist off will not seal properly. You will need regular pry off.

Sometimes you can get a twist off to seal. Sometimes you miss. It’s just best to use pry offs only.

Can’t tell were you live, add something to your profile  . Maybe someone has an excess they will give you.

If you live in a “bottle deposit” state, go to the recycle center and buy some bottles for the deposit. Take a flashlight and look for the cleaner bottles. If they don’t clean up, send back for your deposit.

If you are not in a “bottle deposit” state, check with a bar that sells micro brews. A good tip to the bartender can get you all the bottles you want. If they sell swing tops, even better.

Offer a reward to friends to save some bottles. Maybe a 6pk for each case of clean bottles? No mold in the bottom! And get them to remove the labels

Most twist-off bottles are thinner and more prone to breaking when capping at home. Could lead to bleeding and beer waste; not worth the risk IMO.

Just buy yourself some Sam Adams or other non-twistoff brews, or ask friends or bars for their empties.

Here in Michigan where there is a $0.10 deposit on bottles, you can buy empties from stores just for the deposit; after a good clean and maybe some label removal work, you are good to go.

You’d be surprised how quickly you amass bottles. For my first batch, I bought one case/saved one case. Now (by three months later), let me do a quick inventory…

about fifty filled and capped
A milk crate full of longnecks, so let’s call that about another case
About two cases of “normal” bottles
A few bombers

So now, I’m picky. No more trying to scrub impossible Summit labels off.

Seriously, though, just pick up some Sierra Nevada or something, save the bottles, and you’ll have two cases before you know it.

New Belgium and Odell’s have great bottles and the labels come off extremely easily. Oh, and their beer isn’t bad either.

Just an added thought. When you get tired of bottling and put the tapper in the basement don’t give away all your bottles. A friend of a friend, not me, gave away all his bottles and then decide to do some bottle aged beers and had to start scrounging again, until I, I mean he, had the 6 cases he needed. God Bless Spotted Cow drinking friends.(New Glarus paper labels soak off easily).
