Hi, my name is Shane Burkhart and I am creating a service called Beerocity that will send you the ingredients for a unique beer every month. Right now I am trying to gauge interest in the service and would love to get feedback from you guys.
If you’re polling interest, I’d have to say “meh.” I like something in just about every style, and still the concept of just letting someone else choose for me makes me nervous. Is there a choice each month? Is there an opt-out for unappealing recipes?
The price/quality would have to be a significant value proposition over choose-for-yourself homebrew kit sellers. NB gets me whatever I am in the mood for, usually under a week.
Columbia House started in the 1950’s when rural access to record stores was less convenient than mail-order. Sears, and Penny’s also did huge mail-order business. Those business models went extinct with the internet. Mail-order catalogs evolved into web sites. I order regularly from NB because they are more convenient than driving 25min to the closest LHBS, that may-or-may-not have what I need.
Jelly-of-month memberships are usually gifted, but an annual beer-kit membership would be roughy $360 assuming an average $30 kit price each month. Who would gift that?
Given the limited detail available, I say this plan has a steep uphill climb.
These guys already do it: http://www.craftbeerclub.com/
It’s an interesting concept to offer seasonally appropriate brews throughout the year. I haven’t personally used this site but I imagine (besides sites like NB et al) they would be your competition.

Actually, they send you 12 or 24 bottles of 4 different beers each month, which sounds awesome. Given 4 varieties each month, you would have to like something. I have a friend who gets bottles delivered each month, although I’m not sure if it’s the same or different club. He’s been happy with it.
OP speaks to a 3 or 5 gallon recipe kit per month.
