Anyone ever made their own thermowell?

I would like to make a thermowell stopper that I can put my stc 1000 controller probe into so I can see the temp in the wort during fermentation. Anyone ever done this?

Not much point to it, in my opinion. Tape a probe to the side of the fermentor with a piece of insulation over the top of it and it will read very close to the beer temperature. I suspect the difference will be smaller than the uncertainty in the measurement system, meaning that for all practical purposes, the accuracy will be just as good as you would get by using a thermowell.

Yep, easy to do if if you have access to a brake press and a good welder. Stainless tube from McMaster Carr, saw to length, pinch and weld the end.

The insulation and tape seems to be working just fine. Thanks!

A couple decades engineering precision thermal control instruments does occasionally come in handy for more important things, like beer.
