I found some clean 55 gallon steel drums on craigslist for $20. Does anyone know of a way to make them food grade for fermenting or maybe as an electric HLT? I was thinking there might be some kind of enamel or epoxy coating that could be applied to the inside that’s safe? Cheers
What were they used for before you obtained them? :?:
are they steel or stainless steel. i wouldn’t use just steel ones.
Nobody is selling SS barrels for $20. You could use a food grade drum as a fermenter, but they have a plastic lining, so no on boiling in them. You may be on to something with burning that off then enameling them though.
They were used for alcohol, listing doesn’t say which kind, but I assume if they’re dry its fine. Theyre regular steel. Theres another guy selling stainless drums for $150, but I dont know if I’m ready to commit to that yet.
$150 is a steal for SS drums. I doubt that would include shipping, but if they could get to CA sign me up for 3
If you get a standard steel drum with a liner you may be ok. Do so at your own risk
Is it? the guy is in NJ and I’m not sure what it would take for him to ship them out. I guess you could send him an email

I kinda want one… but that really is more beer than I need.
Here’s a guy in Atlanta with some for sale, and he will FedEx them.

I like it!
55 gallon batches!
