genuine lol!

"A watched pot never boils, but an unwatched pot always boils over"Just have fun. It’s a great hobby and don’t let the first boil over, under carb. cracked carboy, or funky beer get you down. Contrary to what you may think we have all had screw ups.

Do not start drinking until the beer is in the fermenter and the yeast is pitched.

A big +1

If you’re using a new aluminum pot, make sure you boil some water in it for a good 15 mins before brew day. Otherwise you’ll get a nasty metallic taste on your first batch. I know this from experience.

My first batch should have been called Cyborg Caribou Slobber

Sanitize it.

If at ANY point you wonder to yourself, “Do I need to sanitize this?” The answer is yes except for before you start the boiling.

If you are using city tap water; make sure it does not have chlorine, chloramine, or other stuff in it. If your water is bad you will come back here asking why the brew went wrong when you had followed all the directions meticulously.

Organization is key. The more organized you are the smoother the day will go. Get everything set up, sanitized & your game plan laid out before you turn that burner on. I set up a sanitized area, a hop station and an area for LME/DME & specialty grains. Then I crack a beer and get to brewing!

same for a copper immersion chiller. Make sure it’s got no machine oil on it. clean it good then sanitize it.

Hot Wort = Culinary Napalm.
Boiled over Wort = Matrimonial Napalm.

Have fun. Plain and simple.

So much has been covered already. Here’s one: Don’t Cross the Streams. That would be bad.

A spray bottle with water in it helps keep the boil over at bay.

A spray bottle of StarSan is useful for quickly sanitizing things.

Keep them marked.

It’s very possible that something will not go as planned. If that happens, just go with it and note it as a lesson learned. Fortunately homebrewing is generally a very forgiving hobby.

Do a good job of sanitizing your fermenter - Clean it well with hot water, then sanitize it with starsan and DO NOT RINSE IT before putting your cooled wort in it and pitching yeast.

Aerate the hell out of the cooled wort before pitching! I used to shake it a bit, but now use pure oxygen. Wow, what a difference that makes for fast ferment activity. Have fun!!
