Brewing caribou slobber brown ale . temp on the out side of carboy is 70 in a closet. If that is to high i can move it to the basement. if it is to warm then will it hurt to move it ?? made the batch last night.
Yes 70 room temp is way to high, that will put fermentation at 75 and will kick off lots of fusals if you can get the temps down to 62 would be better. Most fermantation takes place in the first 5 days with a 24 hour lag time, so if you can move it it will help. Others on here may be able to help more than I can with the specifics. Cheers
will the move hurt anything
Most ale yeasts give the best results if fermentation temps are kept in the low to mid 60’s. Fermentation generates heat, and so temps usually get about 5 degrees above ambient temps at the peak of fermentation. I would move the fermenter to your basement as soon as you can. There’s no harm in moving it at this point.
thanks for the feedback my carboy is moved & the temp is down 2 degrees which is 68 what would be to cold ??? going to watch carefully tonight.
Too cold??? I wouldn’t worry until you started to go under 60.
+1 i keep the basment at my house at 58 with no problems as the winter goes i may be able to cold crash down there. With most ale yeasts you should not have to worry about temps being to cold until it hits 52 but fermentation will go very slow at 52-56. Cheers
You can always just check gravity readings too over the course of a few days and make sure it’s fermenting. I’d say the same as others, get it under 70 and you’ll be good. I’ve fermented in the mid 50’s with ale yeast without issue.
