Exactly, that struck me as odd as well. Unless they mean an undesirable strain may dominate the fermentation and kill off the desirable strain, like you would get in pitching bottle dregs from an old ale that was carbonated with wine yeast.
But yes, being Wikipedia take everything with a grain of salt.
