I picked up a used Vissani Wine Fridge yesterday to use as my fermenting chamber, as it fits a bucket or carboy with no mods required.
looking for recommendations on which Johnson Control unit would work best to keep ale temps:
the $53 Johnson Controls A19AAT-2C Freezer Temperature Controller
or
the $72 Johnson Controls Digital Thermostat Control Unit
Read the reviews of the A19AAT-2C and that seemed like it would work but I would go with the other model if necessary.
Just wondering what the rest of you are using and why.
I have the digital controller and it can be used to heat or cool, also I think you can get a bit more accurate with the temp settings. Worth it for the difference in price.
I just bought the digital controller. Hooked it up today to take it for a test drive before I actually use it for fermenting. When it comes to electronics, I’m not the sharpest knife in the drawer, and had no problem figuring it out. I can’t say anything about the analog controller.
Dumb question:
On the digital model what is the best way to place the probe in the fridge?
The pic makes it look too thick to just close the door on it.
Or does a hole have to be drilled?
My vote is for the unit in my signature line. I have one, know 3 other that do, and there are several others on this board that have it.
I got the digital to use in an upright freezer. I have the sensor in a ziplock bag in a jar of water inside. The door closes and seals just fine in the wire. I’ll eventually drill a hole for it.
Does that require wiring or is it out-of-the-box usable?
Electrical wiring = cluelessness on my part

Yes you need to wire it. It’s simple. I have instructions in the tread. I’m not an electrical genius, but with instructions I can do most anything.
Do you have any friends that could help you?

Not with any more of a skillset than I have.
I may go with the Ranco ETC 111000…
If you can wait until May, I would ride the cycle over and wire it up for you. Always looking for an destination/excuse to hit the road.
