You might consider setting some money aside for couples counseling. If he keeps getting all these goodies your never going to see him. Brewing is like crack; you can never get enough sessions or equipment. Once you get the equipment then there’s the work space, and the shelving to store it all on, oh and the stainless steel tables. You have to have the proper work surface, and by the way is his mash tun big enough.
He’s a lucky man to have such an understanding generous partner.
Just ask him what he wants or give him your personal gift certificate. It may lack that special touch but he’s sure to get what he needs, at least for the moment. Remember there’s always Valentines Day.
Yeast culture kit:
http://www.midwestsupplies.com/master-y ... g-kit.htmlI couldn’t find one on NB site. I know I have seen it in their catalog.
Ok he made his own stir plate (out of an antique cigar box, it’s pretty sexy!), he jsut bought the massive burner (hello turkey day!), he just ordered his beer gun bottle to send off for competitions…
I’m really leaning toward the yeast culture kit but the one from that link is out of stock the freezer I wanted to get isn’t the right size so I give up on that. But I have valentine’s day, his birthday, and our wedding anniversary right around the corner… that’s a lot of nighties… LOL
thanks gentlemen!
side note, he has this book http://www.northernbrewer.com/shop/yeas … ation.html and carries it with him everywhere, if I didn’t love him so much I’d be embarassed! Yeast culture kit is definitely the way to go!
Call NB directly. I know they carried it in the past.
Man, I really like how hard you are trying and how focused you are. That is awesome.
What kind of water does he use for brewing? I assume he is doing all grain? Pretty sure you said he had a mill. Does he use tap water and treat it? Something you both could enjoy might be a R.O. (Reverse Osmosis) water system. It would give him a blank slate on water where he can easily customize to the type of beer style he is brewing.
They are not that expensive and you could enjoy it too because it makes great drinking water.
Here is one I have and it works really well.
http://www.bigbrandwater.com/hydrotech6.htmlIt takes a little while to collect the water for brewing as you can only do about 2.5 - 3 gallons every 3-4 hours, but with some planning, I make it work well.
@Roddy: I found it on More Beer! they even have an “intermediate” and “advanced” selection, so thats something to think about… its about $200 difference but what I’ve learned is if he starts out with beginner or intermediate ANYTHING and gets into it, he buys the advanced shortly after… so maybe going with the Advanced kit would be best.
@560sdl: We are on well water, would you still recommend that system for us? We have some pretty big tanks in our basement that do various things because of the well so I’m not sure how to hook a system like that up, but I know water quality is super important so might be something to talk to him about and build up our home system anyway…
thanks guys, you are all so wonderful! and I already got him a hoodie from BN Army since he listens to the podcast archives every sunday when he brews and I’m really surprising him with the ladies tshirt for me to wear when I watch him brew!
If you are on a well, RO is perhaps even better, but you might have things taken care of with all you misc filtration. Don’t know if he has gotten your water tested by a lab, but that is super important for brewing. Sounds like he is the kind of guy that has done that and perhaps your water tested great. You might check because the RO is pretty cool and takes everything out.
You can get big expensive, whole house systems, but the link I sent is made for under a sink, like your kitchen sink or something similar.
Get him a coffee roaster. Then he can hand craft his own beverages morning and night.
http://morecoffee.com/I can’t argue with the coffe roaster. I’ve used an i-Roast2 for years and it’s awesome. But as for a gift idea, all you need to do is give him permission
To punch holes in a perfectly good wall in the name of beer.
He’ll figure out the rest.
Quickly.
And then you get something like this:
Does he have a copy of " Brew like a Monk " ??
And theres Gordon Strong’s new book, and Randy Mosher’s latest. Both are excellent books for a serious brewer.
Not knowing what everything is I would start with a stir plate with at least a 3L container for doing yeast starters. If he has that I would look at an oxygen stone. If he has all of those then I would look at a pressure cooker so that he could can his wort to make quick starters.
