West Coast Imperial IPA recipe inconsistency

I noticed a small error in the recipe:
HOPS & FLAVORINGS

  • 1 oz Summit (FWH - add to kettle along with steeping grains)

Notice it says 1oz for FWH of summit hops.
Then in the instructions it states:

  1. While the grain is steeping, add 1/2 oz Summit
    pellet hops (FWH).

I went ahead and used the whole 1 oz, hope it doesn’t come out too bitter.

Did the give you 1.5 or 2 oz total os summit hops?

The kit came with 2oz of Summit.
The hop schedule uses all 2oz, but the directions later only list 1.5oz

I’d really like to know which one NB intended for this kit, it could be either way honestly.

Not that it’ll make a huge difference or anything, but I like to brew them exactly as intended before modifying them.

Hop schedule:

  • 1 oz Summit (FWH - add to kettle along with steeping grains)
  • 1/2 oz Summit (30 min)
  • 1/2 oz Summit (0 min)

Directions:

  1. While the grain is steeping, add 1/2 oz Summit
    pellet hops (FWH).

  • Add 1/2 oz Summit hops to the kettle 30 minutes before the
    end of the boil.

  • Add 1/2 oz Summit hops to the kettle at the end of the boil.

A call to the store will give you better results than posting here.

Even then, 2 calls could yield 2 different answers.

If it were me, I tend to lead to more hops rather than less and if when you taste it, it is too hoppy, note to file for the next time. Chances are they will never actually correct the recipe sheet

being its extract and likely partial boil, I’d use a full ounce for FWH. The all grain kit actually calls for 1oz at 60 and the other ounce for FWH.

Yeah I used the full oz for FWH, I’m really looking forward to this kit.
Had 6oz of hops in the boil, and 4 more for dry hopping.
Mmm cascade.

How can you have 6oz in the boil and 4 for dry hopping when you post above states there are 2oz in the hop schedule?

I only posted the relevant discrepancy.

HOPS & FLAVORINGS

  • 2 oz Cascade (0 min)

  • 1/2 oz Summit (0 min)

  • 4 oz Cascade (Dry Hop)

I get about 65 IBU’s with the 1/2 oz FWH addition vs about 80 IBU’s for a 1 oz addition (this is calculating a FWH as = a 20 minute addition). The palate can only perceive about 50-60 IBU’s, so I doubt this would make much difference, especially in an IIPA. I used 18 ounces in my last IIPA (and that was only a half-batch), so I’d say you’ll be just fine.

When faced with a discrepancy like this, always add more hops. I like hoppy beer.
