Top off before chilling?

Can I pour H2O directly into my brew kettle to top of before chilling?

You can, but you would have a larger, though slightly cooler, volume to chill. Would also have a larger volume to handle for pouring into the fermentor.

Here’s my thoughts: I started my boil at 5 gallons. I ended up with roughly 3.5 gallons after my boil. I made the Pliny recipe which has a ton of hops in it. Since it has a lot of hops, it will have a lot of sludge at the bottom when I transfer. Here’s my issue, every ounce lost would mean less at 5 gal than it would at 3.5 gal due to concentration. I’m a novice at best so please feel free to shoot this theory to pieces. Btw, I know the Pliny is a 6 gal recipe.

Thanks!

You could pour the entire contents of the boil kettle into the fermentor through a mesh bag to remove the hop debris.

Brew just hit my primary fermenter with an OG of 1.070. Nailed it!
