Taught a new brewer today

My 25 year old son has expressed a desire to brew beer for a while. I told him to get what we needed and we would do it. I wanted him to be invested if I was going to use my brew day for someone Else’s beer. We finally did it today. I made him get his own grains(Yes I started him on all grain… A LAGER TOO!), yeast, hops, etc…and his own fermenter so he wouldn’t be tying up one of mine. He bought his own keg and tap system but will be using my CO2 to carb the keg. I let him use my mash tun and brewpot and cooker( I got a refill of gas out of the deal. And all my equipment got a good cleaning when we were done).

We made what we are calling American red lager. Pretty much an Irish red ale but with American lager yeast and about half the hops bittering. This was what his idea was. He is thinking it will be like Killian’s Red. The wort tasted pretty good and the OG hit 1040 just as planned

That is really cool. Well done.
So far, my son got me on the brew habit by giving me a Mr. Beer for Christmas last year,
and he helps me drink the 5 gallon batches I now make…
I’ll get him to brew with me one day…
