I’m making a wit this weekend and I’m using flaked oats, which I’ve never used before. Do I have to crush them w/ the rest of the grain or just throw them in the mash as is?
just throw them in the mash.
If you’re using regular rolled oats it wouldn’t hurt to crush them though you don’t have to. I usually use instant oats, which I just throw into the mash as is.
What you probably don’t want to use would be pinhead (steel cut) oats since they are dense and would work better if precooked.
The thing about oats too is that you don’t really need to use a lot to get benefit (in terms of body/mouthfeel) from their use.
