New to brewing, slightly confused. Everything I read emphasizes importance of sanitizing everything yet my instructions on caribou slobber says add 2.5 gal cool water to fermenter, add cooled wort and top off with water to make 5 gallons. No mention of sterile, bottled, or tap water?? If it doesn’t matter, then why sanitize?
In this country bottled spring water, RO water, and distilled water is considered sanitary as long as it is stored properly. Water from a private well or a city water supply is also considered sanitary. Municipal water does need to be treated because it will contain chlorine or chloramines.
I use our well water for topping off directly from the tap with no problems. I do make sure the container for holding this water has been sanitized. Unlike the water, the container is exposed to naturally existing contaminants of the wort in the air.
Spray the faucet with starsan wash and rinse a jug should be fine. Keep it in your refrigerator and it will help chill your wort
Thanks a million
