Stale DME

A friend is getting out of brewing and gave me a bunch of equipment and some ingredients. There are a few 1lb bags of light DME. A couple are pretty old and dried and almost solid. I was able to break one up, but still need to work the other one.

I assume this DME will still be OK for doing starters…anyone disagree?

You are decanting most of the starter beer, yes?

Not always, but I probably will if I’m using old DME.

I wouldn’t hesitate to use it for starters. In this case I would decant, although it’s not my SOP for standard or low gravity beers.

No doubt it’s ok for a starter. In fact, if you have a ton of it that you want to get rid of, brew up a batch of extract with some steeping grains after you break it apart. Design a rogue recipe and have at it. That DME is amazing stuff that is still usable unless you have mold growing in it.
