Some Basic Questions

Just a couple weeks away from kegging my first batch, and I’ve got some basic questions.

  1. Is 5 feet really long enough for the liquid line, or should I go longer? That’s what came with my kit. I’m looking to grow from 2 to 6 kegs, and want to plan accordingly.

  2. How long should I set the anti-short-cycle function on my temp controller?

Start with 5 ft and add more later if needed I have 5.5 on my hoses, set your controller plus 3 deg.

The length of the beverage line is dependent on the pressure in the keg.

Easier to remove line, than to add it.

edit: add “length” to the 1st line.

From personal experience and from reading alot of foamy beer posts, I’d suggest getting longer lines. I use 10’ of 3/16" ID tubing from Home Depot and I get good pours (12 PSI at 40-45*F). I’ve also seen posts on some swizzles you can put in the beer line or diptube to slow the beer down without releasing CO2.

Yes you can add some epoxy mixers to the line to simulate a longer line. I use them in my picnic taps so I can use a shorter line.

Usually you can get 2 from a package of glue at the store. If you have a Grainger type store in town, you can avoid buying the glue.

+1 on the grainger 10-pack. They’re reusable, of course, if you clean them well and sanitize thoroughly. I use one with a 5-ft line at 8-12 PSI and 38-42 deg F, and my pours are excellent.

OK, so I ordered a 12 pack on Amazon for $11.16 with free two day shipping (Prime rocks!)

I don’t want to make any false assumptions. Where in the line do you install them and in what configuration? For example, in the faucet end of the tube with the pointy end facing toward the faucet.

I will probably add length when I end up installing Perlick’s. For now, I’ve got seven picnics.

Guess I never looked at the geometry of the mixer. I don’t think it matters. The beer doesn’t know if it’s going clockwise or counter clockwise.

I have them at the picnic tap. Some people put them in the dip tube.

I like the fact that I can see them. That way I can tell if I need to disassemble the line for cleaning.

So, I got the mixer nozzles today. How exactly do you fit them in 3/16 id beer line given the tail? Do you cut it off?

You pull the “twister” out of the tube and insert that into the beer line.

Ah, that makes sense. Thanks!

Insert it into the dip tube. Should fit most dip tubes cleanly and easily, without force.
