I brewed up a 5 gallon batch of the Scottish Wee Heavy a few weeks ago, and I checked the OG. The kit says that the OG is 1.083. However, when I checked it using a hydrometer, my OG was 1.140, I did make sure to calculate any temperature fluctuations. Has anyone else experienced this huge differences in the OG? I followed the directions to the “T”.
You mixed it with water? If so you didnt mix it well enough so so you ended up with a concentrated reading.
I put in 2 gallons of water in the primary before I transferred the wort into it. Then I added more water to bring it up to 5 gal. I used an aeration system and let it aerate for ~15 min. I then checked the gravity. The wort and water were mixed quite well.
An aeration system will not thoroughly mix the water and wort. If you must test the OG of an extract batch, I’ve found that 5 minutes of shaking will get everything blended. If you added all the extract and got 5 gallons then the OG on the recipe sheet is the OG you have.
