Rust on Enamel Stockpot

Yesterday I picked up a 3 gallon enamel stockpot at Goodwill for $9. Some of the coating is missing from the bottom, but I bought it anyway so as to make full-volume split boils easier. And I’m cheap. I didn’t realize the missing enamel would make it rust til I brought it home and put water in it just to check for any major damage. My question is, should I return it? Will the rust/missing enamel adversely affect my beer?

Yes. Don’t use an enameled pot with a compromised surface. Iron will leach out and could contribute to metallic flavors, not to mention that iron is no friend of yeast.

I through out my first brew pot because the enamel was chipping and rusting. It will impart a bad taste. Sorry.

Thanks for the info. I just returned it and got my money back.

+1 I used an 8 gal pot for about 5 yrs… When it got chips in it, I gave it to Goodwill.
