Racking directly on to prior yeast cake?

I kegged my AK47 Pale mild and racked a newly brewed Nut Brown onto the 1945 neo Brittania. How do I determine my OG? PS Holy Shnikies! did this take off. Vigorious fermentatiuon within 2 hours and massive junk in the blow off recepticle from the blow off tube.

you figure O G with a hydro  i have done this before and i think if you get a reading before fermentation starts it will be fairly accurate.

Great way to get a ferment going FAST. But if you racked onto the whole cake, that’s a lot more yeast than you needed (and which contributed to the blowoff). I always get better results using 1/3, or at most no more than 1/2 of a saved yeast cake. And it’s plenty for a healthy ferment and no blowoff.
The beer will be fine.
I would just hate losing volume to unnecessary blowoff. :frowning:
