Question on a kit that i received

Here is the thing, I did a mini mash of Hefeweizer. First time brewing and after the mash i figured the efficiency to be 79.87% using a site from brewers friend and after adding 3.3lbs of LME, and completing the boil my efficiency dropped to 50% completing the 5 gallon kit with a OG of 1.040 SG instead of the projected 1.052 OG. The shop i bought it from, the guy, was kinda busy it seemed a did some calculations in his head to convert the kit from an extract to a partial. From the research iv done it seams he may have given me to little grain?

here is the recipe.

2.5lbs of 2 row
1.5lbs wheat.
.25 carapils
3.3lbs of LME wheat.

With this amount should i have got the projected OG of 1.052 or did he not give me enough fermentable sugars?

What do you think?

What volume did you use to figure the 79.87%?

For a 5 gallon volume, BeerTools shows 54%.

To reach 1.052 you would need 6lbs of 2row. Or split the 3.5lb addition between the wheat and 2row.

Did you just pull the grain out, or did you set it in a colander and pour some fresh water over it to “sparge” some more sugars out of it?

For 5 gallons, I get 1.044 assuming a 75% efficiency.

2-row = 1.013
Wheat malt = 1.008
Cara-Pils = 1.001
Wheat LME = 1.022

for the mash was two gallons of mash water w/grain in a large bag, after 1 hour i removed grains, and rinsed with one gallon of 175% water to complete the mash with 3 gallons that i checked the SG off?

I know?!?! something is not right? what should the grain amount have been?

thanks everyone! im going to go see him and maybe he will throw in another kit or kick in a refund?!?!

Oops, I should have also asked what the SG was for this sample.

With the grains you listed, 80% would be 1.040 @ 3 gallon.

One would have to hit 92% to reach 1.052 @ 5 gallon.

If we figure 75% efficiency, another 1lbs of 2 row.
70%, add 1.5lbs.

Or the amounts I listed earlier.

Trying to do the math in his head was a difficult task. Free kit is asking a lot IMO.
