Partial Mashing Rahr 2-row - any advice?

Hey, All,

I’m going to brew a steam beer and doing a partial mash.
I have 3lbs of 2-row and planning to mash/steep that before going to the boil/extract-typical part.

Any advice on partial mashing or in particular Rahr 2-row.
This will be my first time, so all advice, ideas and have-you-thought-abouts are welcome!

Nothing special needs to be done. Rahr is very good malt and I’ve always found it to be trouble free.

I was just planning to steep it in a few muslin bags
in 1.75 gal of water

for 60 min
at 152ºF

Sparge it at 170ºF to get to 2.5 gal

Would this make sense?

I have actually never done a partial mash before but just in general for mashing I would make sure you have a reliable thermometer as temperature is important. Other than that just have fun with it.

Yep, sounds good. To make sure you don’t have pH issues, don’t use any more water than that for the mash.

Denny-what grain/water ratio is best to avoid issues with PH?

To be safe, I’d keep it under 2 qt./lb.
