Partial mash

im going to brew a partial mash, Surly Bender, my mash tun is 48 QT i have about 5.5 lbs of grain total, my question is would this be enough grain to use my mash tun or am i better off using a sock or two and doing it in a brew kettle??

Use a sock or two. That’s probably not enough grain for a proper runoff and sparge in a conventional mash tun. I know I use the BIAB method for any recipes with less than 6.25 lbs grain, which is the cutoff for my own blue Igloo cooler mash tun.

thanx for the quick reply, thats what i figured as it seemed like a lot of grain but not in relation to a 48 Qt. mash tun. LOL. :slight_smile:
