I am new to home brewing. I got started when a friend gave me a Mr. Beer as a gift. I made 2 brews with the Mr. Beer and neither of these came out with any hop flavor. I thought that it might of been because Mr. Beer recipe kits come with hopped malt extract. I wanted to step up to being more of a true home brewer. I ordered 2 caribou slobber 1 gallon kits and followed the recipe exactly. I tried my first bottle today and it has no hop flavor. In addition a friend made his first home brew batch a while ago and it had no hop flavor, as well. What are we doing wrong as new home brewers that is causing this lack of hop flavor? I am at a loss.
Caribou Slobber isn’t supposed to have much hop flavor. If you want more hops, next time add 0.25 oz of American “C” hop pellets in the last few days of the fermentation, such as Cascade, Centennial, Citra, Columbus, Chinook, etc. You’ll get hop flavor for sure! No need to stick to the recipe – brew the beer that YOU want to drink!
Thanks for the information. I will give this a try.
