New Kettle, burned rubber smell?

Got a 15 gallon kettle from SS Brewtech. I used it for the first time last weekend and when I was heating up the wort I could smell burning rubber. The smell faded after a while so I didn’t think anything about it.

I was getting ready to brew again today and was heating up some water in the kettle when I noticed little black bits floating around. I fished them out with a strainer then drained the water from the ball valve into a bucket. A whole bunch of black pieces came out of the valve.

It must have been a seal in the valve that I had smelled burning last week. The valve still operates ok, no leaks or anything.

Has anybody else experienced this?
