I had a glass of this last weekend in Madison and I’m still trying to decide if I liked it or not. It has a very heavy chocolate flavor and aroma, like they used bittersweet bakers cocoa. I tasted a bit of banana from the abbey yeast and I didn’t quite like the way it blended with the chocolate. There was some spice as well, but it was muted. Overall, kind of weird and I did not buy more when I saw it in the liquor store while I was stocking up on stuff I can’t get locally.
We have a couple in the fridge now. I’ll try to remember to post here after we drinks 'em. New Glarus in general brews some pretty great stuff. My favorite is the Stone Soup.
To me, the Chocolate Abbey tastes just like Bazooka bubblegum. Not exactly what I would have expected out of a chocolate Belgian beer. I didn’t really like it.
