Munton's yeast

Several months ago I brewed a bitter. I fermented half with S-04 and half with Munton’s. I preferred the S-04 portion at first, but had the last bottle from the Munton’s half two nights ago and I must say it was REALLY good.

That’s surprising for such a cheap yeast. Haven’t used that yeast in years.

I have a good friend that uses nothing but Muntons yeast in EVERY beer he makes…And I do have to say that he makes some pretty good beers and has won several compititions…

Our LHBS had Wyeast packs that were way out of date, so we grabbed some Munton’s and the ale turned out very good. Had similar results with Coopers dry yeast, also.

I revisited muntons a while back.
I rehydrated it and pitched fairly cold (< 60f ). fermented in the mid 60’s.
The beer was a brown ale that tasted very good.
I think that muntons has a bad rap from being pitched/fermented way too warm with beer kits.

That could very well be the case. I may revisit this yeast as well for shiggles.
